About Sugathi
Education improves the level of human well being. Basic education covering reading, writing, studying basic sciences and doing arithmetic is considered as a crucial aspect of quality of life.
Sugathi (which means welfare or bliss) is a group started with an aim of working for social development by contributing in the areas of basic education and child development. Sugathi firmly believes that these are the areas of great relevance with respect to the future of children.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam says in his book Indomitable Spirit . "A scene appears in front of me where there is a child, a teenager, an adult and a leader. All of them are facing a situation of human need, but each one reacts differently. The child asks , "What can you do for me?" The teenager says , "I want to do it alone." The young person proclaims, "Let us do it together." The leader offers, "What can I do for you?" The education system has a tremendous responsibility to transform a child into a leader – the transformation from "What can you do for me?" to "What can I do for you?". These leaders, as enlightened Indian citizens, work for the development of society as a whole.
Short term goals
1.Initially, we help the organizations/ charitable societies/ NGOs , which support the school education of the poor and underprivileged children. Our help can be of any kind i.e., infrastructural or voluntary support.
2.Giving our time to children is as important as donating money. We can spend our free time with them on a regular basis. We can teach them basic Maths, Sciences and English etc . We can organize events say games, painting , singing, quiz programs or anything which makes their mind sharp and brings out the creativity. We will conduct these kind of workshops and activities in Government schools also.
Long term objectives
1. We will address the grass root problems prevailing in the Indian education system viz., out-of-school children, school dropouts and quality of education etc.
2.We will sponsor the education of meritorious but poor children at school level.
3.We will help Government schools to have conducive environment.

Sugathi activities started at Jeevanahalli school
Sugathi activities at Govt. School, Jeevanahalli were formally launched on 18th October. We first interacted with the teachers and presented them our plan. Sugathi is going to do activities in the school twice a month (on the alternate Saturdays), with two members going each time. We will start with English and extra curricular activities. Later other subjects will also be covered. As far as academic activities are concerned, our concentration will be on kids from 5th, 6th and 7th standards only. Kids from the lower standards will be involved in games or play based learning activities. There is another important point to be kept in mind. As the class room syllabus is taken care of by the teachers, our activities should be aimed at improving kids’ knowledge and understanding of various subjects/topics.
The teachers were happy about our plan. They too felt that our activities should be different from their regular teaching. But, they suggested weekly activities stating a reason that kids might not benefit much from fortnightly activities. We could not agree to this because of the limited number of volunteers available at present. We could convince them with an alternative plan: When we go to school on a Saturday, the teachers will be provided with Tests/ Quizzes / assignments to be given to the kids on the next Saturday. By doing this way, we can at least “try” to see that whatever we taught will not completely go out of their mind.
After we were done with our discussion with the teachers, we made the kids from all classes assemble in a class room. We asked each of them to introduce him/her by telling the name and Class in English. All of them could do it well but needed a little guidance. (Only the kids from 5th, 6th and 7th standards can read English words. Others can just read the alphabets but not the words. This is where we have to start from.) Later, we asked all of them to draw anything they like. As expected, most of them are very expressive and creative.
Just want to make a point before we conclude. Many of the children come from the sections that are weak both socially and economically. But they are really sharp with good deal of grasping power.Though they learn many things at school with lot of enthusiasm, lack of congenial atmosphere at their home or colony they live in, does not help them in sustaining the same tempo after leaving the school. So it is going to be our responsibility to see that they get involved more in studies, qualitatively, and maintain the vigour even after going back to home from the school.
The date of our next activity will be posted soon.

Plan for Sugathi activities - Gear up for the action !!!!!
In the previous post, we presented the details of Jeevanahalli, BEL schools. Here is the plan chalked out for the upcoming activities in these schools.
• Set of 2 volunteers will visit the Jeevanahalli school twice a month, on alternate weekends. The activities planned will mainly involve teaching and extra curricular will be conducted on regular basis. This has been decided on the basis of 2 factors: firstly, because we are using their scheduled school periods and not any extra hours. And secondly because we can really add value to what those kids are learning utilizing our knowledge and exposure.
• Keeping in mind the continuation and comfort levels of the kids, same set of volunteers will visit both the times in a month and finish the planned syllabus. The next month next set of volunteers will visit. Keeping in view of any kind of continuation that might be necessary over the month, the volunteers who visited will handover all the details (relating to syllabus and kids) to the next set of volunteers.
• Students from this school participate regularly in inter school competitions conducted between all these Govt Telugu Schools. We plan to prepare them for these kind of competitions as well.
As of now, we don't plan to do regular activities in BEL school mainly due to the large strength. But we are planning to do some research as to whether we can help them in some other way. Activities can be planned on the eve of special occasions like Independence Day, Children’s Day etc.
With regard to Ananya, Science workshop plan has been put on the back burner. We felt this way because of the unique teaching methodology and syllabus followed at Ananya. So, we will go ahead with our own extra-curricular activities.
We spoke to the Management of Anatha Shishu Sevashrama regarding our teaching activities with their kids. The Management informed us that the children were free on Saturday afternoons. You will be updated with more details in the next post.
So guys, time to get active and do something as members of Sugathi. As our association with Govt schools is at an early stage, please come up with suggestions and ideas to make it stronger and successful.
We request all of you to let us know how many of you can involve in which of the activities (involvement in all activities is most welcome :), it just can't get better!!!)
We are going to meet the Jeevanhalli school and Anatha Shishu Sevashrama managements on 20th Sep'08 and 21st Sep'08 respectively to present our plans. Interested people, please mail us.

Information on Jeevanahalli and BEL schools
On 30th Aug’08 , Sugathi members visited 2 Govt. Telugu Schools. These are located in Jeevanahalli & BEL.
The details about the school located at Jeevanahalli are:
• It is a linguistic minority upper primary school (1st Class to 7th Class) run by Govt. of Karnataka. In Banagalore, there are many such schools (both Telugu and Tamil).
• Most of the children are the kids of daily labourers, construction site workers, servants and watchmen migrated to B'lore from A.P. If their parents go back to A.P, the kids will also naturally leave the school. Right now, there are 50 children in the school.
• There are 4 teachers + 1 Head Mistress.
• The school is located in a place which was a park erstwhile. It is a pucca building at one corner of the park (3 rooms - 2 being used as classrooms with partitions within them, 1 used as staff room & classroom and a small room used for storing purpose) and the remaining area in the park is being used as a play ground.
• The languages taught are Telugu, Kannada, English, Maths, Science & Social Studies. We have gone through their books, and most of the syllabus is covered as activities i.e. their text books are more like workbooks.
• We spoke to the Head Mistress and another male teacher there. They assured that they are very happy to be associated with us and are more than willing to let us help them in any way, be it teaching, conducting activities, sports or even financial help.
• Regarding when we can meet the kids, the school works till 3 PM on weekdays and till 1 PM on Saturdays. The school will remain closed on Sundays. We can use few hours of their Saturday but within their school timings.
The details about the BEL school are:
• BEL School, run by Bharat Electronics Limited., has classes from 1st to 7th Class. It was started by BEL to cater the schooling needs of the children of the employees. But unfortunately, only 12% of the employees’ children study at this school.
• The school has three media of instruction: Telugu, Kannada and English. We have visited the Telugu medium school last week, as part of our plan to do activities.
• The number of children in Telugu school is 202. 90% of the children come from the families of construction workers, daily labourers migrated from Andhra.
• Mr. Srinivas, a teacher at the school explained us that he had to visit the houses of most of the children, convince their parents to send them to school.
• This school also has got considerable % of drop outs. The reason is the same as the one mentioned in the case of Jeevanahalli school. Children will go back to their hometowns, in Andhra, along with their parents.
• A few of them do come back after some time. The school management said that it was a bit challenging to deal with the children who “return” to school. As they lag in the academics, they can not sit with their old buddies but have to go to lower class kid. The kids feel very uncomfortable to do so. The teachers will put them in higher class itself and take them additional classes in the evenings.
• The school starts at 8.30 AM and ends by 2.30 PM. It has got a library where as computer lab and science labs are being set up.
• A nominal fee of Rs.500/- pa is collected from the children and for very poor children it is totally waived off.
• A charitable trust run by Bangalore MP H.J.Anantha Kumar provides the lunch for the children. Some other donors helped the children by distributing school uniforms, bags and books.
• We spoke the HM and a few teachers over there. They are very happy to allow Sugathi to plan any activity that helps the children.
Our visits to these schools did help us in understanding the expectation of school managements and the teachers. Of course, we do not yet know what the children expect because the time we spent with them was very less.

Sugathi to start activities in Government schools
Sugathi is 1 year old. In this one year, our concentration was primarily on the kids from NGO schools and orphanages. Our activities did certainly benefit them by enhancing their knowledge in many an area. At the same time, our knowledge and understanding about the children also improved. It is high time we turn our attention towards the government schools.
Language seems to be the problem for conducting activities in Govt schools in Bangalore. Teaching academic stuff in Kannada is no small job. It demands very good proficiency. At present, many of our volunteers are not so much familiar in Kannada that they can "teach" children. But this problem should not stop us from going ahead with our plans for Govt schools.
To start with, we identified a few Govt Telugu Minority schools. Only reason behind identifying Telugu schools for Sugathi activities is that many of the active volunteers available are Andhraites. So things turn out easy in the beginning and our activities will start taking place. By showing the progress made in this direction, we should expand our volunteer base in such a way that we should have volunteers who can conduct activities in any language. It's going to be our collective responsibility to bring more volunteers (speaking different languages) into Sugathi. Actually, the ultimate solution for this language problem is that all of us should get familiar with Kannada (language used in Textbook not the one used on the roadside). But keeping various factors in mind, this is not achievable overnight!!!

Sugathi Annual Meet'08
Education transforms a child into a stronger individual to face the society boldly and contribute to its development. An year ago, Sugathi evolved out of these thoughts. Being an year old group, Sugathi is expected to act with more maturity that would be possible by retrospection. We felt the same when one of our members proposed the idea of Annual meet. After the discussions, it was decided to have it in Bangalore on Sunday the 29th June 08. The time and venue details were communicated to all our members well in advance.
As planned, the meeting started at 10 AM on 29th June 08. Our members were present in a good number. The Meeting commenced with introduction of all the members. This was followed by a presentation by Srinath on Sugathi-How the journey started? He explained the rationale behind the formation of Sugathi, its short term and the long term objectives. He also talked about Sugathi’s association with Ananya and Samskar. After the inspiring presentation from Srinath, Pardha took the members through the activities of Sugathi and its progress since started. Pardha’s interesting presentation covering each activity mixed with pics and videos created excitement among the members.
There were some interesting questions and discussions on various topics like registering Sugathi, activities, planning, identifying NGOs, collaborating with other voluntary groups and publicizing Sugathi.
This Q & A session was followed by an impressive presentation on Roadmap for Sugathi by Pavan. He discussed about expanding the member base, publicizing Sugathi on web front, future activities and registration process. That concluded the presentations part of our meeting We cut a cake to mark the occasion and the day ended with tea and snacks.
This meet gave a chance to our members to come up with ideas that could help us reach more places in the future. We also got an opportunity to interact with members from some other voluntary groups as well.
We hope our members will spread the word about Sugathi's activities wherever they go and inspire more people to join us.

Updates @ Ananya
The team from Sugathi that has gone to Ananya on 26th Jan,2008 comprised Pardha , Gunashekar , Pavan , Kishore ,Venk (Our Venkata Sunil), Srinivas( Srinath's colleague a new face in Sugathi's core team ) , Aparna & myself.
Actually the day started quite early for me as I reached there an hour before the other guyz ,who got delayed at the bakery. I was lucky to be entertained with a good session of cricket. I was mesmerized at the way these kids batted and fielded and the way one of those kids displayed good footwork and this shows how technically somebody could learn and improve by just watching the television.
Then Uddhav came along and started talking about the day's agenda. As we ran through the agenda, topics changed and the conversation widened , then he started telling me about a session he attended a week earlier where "how NGOs need to raise money" was discussed at length. The session it seems has not given a straight cut answer to the question but it has instituted the process of thinking in everyone's brain. This goes to suggest what a big and attractive sector the Social Service has become, how else could there be so much analysis done on something that doesnt fetch profits? We see a paradigm change in this sector. TISS is now one of the hottest colleges in India for an MBA. On a lighter note he said that he respected the decision of our stopping to donate money to Ananya but said that if the same was today he would have taken steps to prevent our withdrawing as an assignment to the discussion that happened.
The kids have taken part in the Mumbai Marathon which has been in the news recently thanks to stars like John Abraham , Bipasha Basu . One of those kids ran for 17.5 kms in 1hr45mins. Uddhav also ran (I mean walked) in the marathon. This was one of their efforts to raise money.
The rest of the team then arrived and we started to get on with the rest of the activities that were planned for the day.
The theme for the day was " Science " and for demonstrating that we had the children of the school divide into their groups and each group was supposed to draw or paint or make a model of any science topic that they could come up with and explain the process behind it to the whole class and us(Sugathi members).
We and the class were asked to put forth our questions and the questions were to be answered by the respective teams.
There were 5 groups in all and the topics that were demonstrated are : -
1) Digestive System
2) Respiratory System
3) A Butterfly's metamorphosis
4) Photosynthesis
5) A fatory's living model
All the groups were very innovative. We could see creativity oozing out from the brains of the kids in the form of using baloons to resemble the stomach, liver etc and pasting sand on paper to denote the size of the food particles that enter the intestines etc. One of the groups even had a demonstration in an interactive manner ,
where one of the members of their team asked a question and another answered it , this way they made sure the demonstration was more interactive than how it would be in a regular presentation.
Finally when it was our time to show them something we demonstrated the Newton's Third Law - "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction". We blowed up a baloon and stuck it in the direction of the exhaust of a small car and when we let loose of the baloon the car moved in the forward direction which was a result of the thrust created by the air rushing out of the baloon.
With this came to an end an activity which can easily be touted the best and the most challenging activity conducted by Sugathi at Ananya to date. The key to this is that it could focus on enhancing the expressive talent of the kids. We as a team should definitely be proud of the way the activity has gone by . 3 cheers once again to Sugathi . Hip , hip , hurrah!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope Sugathi does many more activities of such kind.
