Ananya Trust, founded by Dr.Shahsi Rao, an educationist by profession, aims at providing educational opportunities for poor children who are rejected by main stream schools or who reject main steam schools for variuos reasons.
The school campus is very calm, away from busy city traffic. It's maintained very clean and green. There are total 53 children in the campus, 28 boys and 25 girls (7-19 age group). As the they are in vacation now, we couldn't meet them. The children stay in the school campus from Monday to Friday. They will be provided with food and accomodation. They will be sent to their houses on Saturday and Sunday to spend time with their parents(constructio n workers or coolies or people from low earning working class).
Ananya people will visit the slums to identify the children. Some times, the children from Ananya refer other children from their areas for admission. The teaching methodology followed by them is in striking contrast to that followed in the other schools. Lot of common things like sewing , cooking etc are taught to them which come to help in performing their regular activities and incase they donot earn a NIOS degree. For ex:- they are also taught about carpentry, pottery etc. theoritically. The syllabus is framed such that they are taught of the general awareness along with the normal subjects, but the way of teaching differs.
The syllabus followed by them is not hierarchical. As and when they have some doubts, they are told about these rather than asking them to wait till the chapter is taught. The example she gave in this context was nice . She said , what if a 1st standard guy hears about America in the news or somewhere and asks the teacher what it is ,in a typical Indian school scenario she would ask him to wait until 6th where Geography and the other things are dealt . In Ananya , as it is a class of a mixed age students they try to explain whatever they feel the class can absorb.
The groups formed are based on their learning capablility (ability of the child to read/write/understand the things) and not on basis of age. This would suit rural schools all the more because a lot of students join at 10 or 12. So they have to start from the basics to even those children which is not otherwise permissible in schools elsewhere.
The children are encouraged to take part in different games like hockey, football. These are taken up in the weekends. These are collaborated with the other NGOs and training camps where coaching is organized for free for these rural area based kids.
About Sugathi
Education improves the level of human well being. Basic education covering reading, writing, studying basic sciences and doing arithmetic is considered as a crucial aspect of quality of life.
Sugathi (which means welfare or bliss) is a group started with an aim of working for social development by contributing in the areas of basic education and child development. Sugathi firmly believes that these are the areas of great relevance with respect to the future of children.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam says in his book Indomitable Spirit . "A scene appears in front of me where there is a child, a teenager, an adult and a leader. All of them are facing a situation of human need, but each one reacts differently. The child asks , "What can you do for me?" The teenager says , "I want to do it alone." The young person proclaims, "Let us do it together." The leader offers, "What can I do for you?" The education system has a tremendous responsibility to transform a child into a leader – the transformation from "What can you do for me?" to "What can I do for you?". These leaders, as enlightened Indian citizens, work for the development of society as a whole.
Short term goals
1.Initially, we help the organizations/ charitable societies/ NGOs , which support the school education of the poor and underprivileged children. Our help can be of any kind i.e., infrastructural or voluntary support.
2.Giving our time to children is as important as donating money. We can spend our free time with them on a regular basis. We can teach them basic Maths, Sciences and English etc . We can organize events say games, painting , singing, quiz programs or anything which makes their mind sharp and brings out the creativity. We will conduct these kind of workshops and activities in Government schools also.
Long term objectives
1. We will address the grass root problems prevailing in the Indian education system viz., out-of-school children, school dropouts and quality of education etc.
2.We will sponsor the education of meritorious but poor children at school level.
3.We will help Government schools to have conducive environment.
